Catchment Service · Puna & East Hawaii

Catchment consultation for new Big Island owners.

Just bought a home on catchment and feeling unsure? A consultation is a relaxed, education-first walkthrough where we show you exactly how your system works, what's healthy, and what isn't. We'll point out any upgrades worth considering — first-flush diverters, UV, better filtration — and build a no-pressure plan around your actual home.

What a consultation covers

  • How your system works — we walk your roof, gutters, tank, pump, and filtration and explain each part in plain language.
  • What's healthy and what isn't — an honest read on your tank's condition, your filters, and your water quality.
  • Your questions, answered — is it safe to drink? how often do I change filters? what do I do in a dry spell? — ask anything.
  • Upgrade recommendations — only what genuinely helps your home, never a sales pitch for things you don't need.
  • A simple plan — a clear, prioritized list of what to do now, what can wait, and what to just keep an eye on.

Perfect for new or anxious catchment owners

If you've moved to Hawaiian Paradise Park, Pahoa, or anywhere in Puna from a place with county water, catchment can feel intimidating — your water now comes off your own roof, through your own tank, filtered by equipment you may have just inherited. That's a lot to take on faith. With 120+ inches of rain a year, VOG from Kīlauea, and constant organic debris, it helps to actually understand what your system is doing and how to keep it healthy.

Our goal isn't to sell you a stack of upgrades. It's to leave you confident about your water — knowing how it works, what to watch for, and what (if anything) is worth improving.

Upgrades we might recommend

Every home is different, so we only suggest what fits yours. Common improvements include a first-flush diverter that sends the dirtiest initial runoff away from your tank, UV treatment that disinfects water at the tap, and upgraded multi-stage filtration (sediment → carbon → UV) for cleaner, safer water. If your system already has what it needs, we'll happily tell you that too.

Common questions

I just bought a catchment home and know nothing — is that okay?

That's exactly who this is for. There are no dumb questions. We'll teach you how your system works from the roof down and make sure you feel confident before we leave.

Will you try to sell me a bunch of upgrades?

No. We're education-first. If your system is solid, we'll say so. We only recommend upgrades that genuinely make your water cleaner or your life easier.

Is my catchment water actually safe to drink?

With a clean tank and proper multi-stage filtration (sediment, carbon, UV), yes. Part of the consultation is checking whether your setup meets that standard — and showing you how to keep it there.
